Sakura in Germantown is by far the best sushi in the Memphis area.  My husband and I come from California where the sushi is rarely disappointing.  We were nervous when we first moved here, that it wouldn’t compare.  And at first, it didn’t.  We tried Benihana’s, Shogun’s, Blue Fin and every location for SekiSui between Cordova and Downtown Memphis, and they are all average and nothing to write home about.  Then one day we were turned onto Sakura and it has been our favorite place ever since.

What sets them apart from other Sushi joints, is their cleanliness and their portion sizes.  HUGE!!  So huge that one night we ordered 5 rolls and we were seriously sick for days.  But it was a good thing, the food was so darn delicious that I couldn’t stop eating!  The waitress even warned us that we were ordering too much food, but we went with it anyhow.  Their portion sizes are double than other places and for the same price.  Now we order 2-3 rolls and even have some leftover to take home and the bill isn’t anymore than 50 bucks and that included a couple rounds of sake.  My favorites are The Bubba Roll and the Joyce Roll.

Joyce Roll

My only complaint about this restaurant would be that they aren’t open on Sundays and we always seem to have a problem with our table being wobbly.  The staff is always friendly, and we enjoy our usual waitress, Betty, she always remembers us.

Paula Deen’s Buffet is located in Harrah’s Casino which is the old Grand Casino in Tunica, MS. The advertising and promotion for the opening has been huge, billboards, TV commercials and as you drive in the entrance of the casino, Paula’s face is plastered everywhere on flag poles every 50 feet. This was a short trip to Tunica for my Husband and I, just a couple days to get away and try out her restaurant. I am a Paula fanatic and Tivo all her shows and was real excited to go. We went about 4pm on a Wednesday. Tickets are sold outside the buffet and no where do they list the prices. Total came out to be $43.00 for two people with tax.

The entrance is like an old house with a wrap around porch. Real cute benches and chairs sit nicely for people to sit and converse.

First walking into the buffet is exciting. There are 6 food stations throughout.

Granny Paul’s Garden. A full salad bar featuring some of Paula’s favorite salads and signature “Skillet Cornbread.”

Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House. Features menu items served at Bubba’s restaurant in Savannah, including the signature “Char Grilled Oysters.”

Hoe Cake & Biscuit Station. Cooked all day long served with butter and syrup if desired.

Lady & Son’s. Features southern comfort foods such as Paula’s famous Fried Chicken, Collard Greens and Lady’s Cheesy Mac.

Captain Michael’s Smokehouse. Features an assortment of meat prepared using Paula’s rubs smoked daily, BBQ pulled pork, smoked sausage and ribs.

Little Jack’s Corner. A wide array of desserts featuring Paula’s famous Gooey Butter Cake, Grandmother Paul’s Sour Cream Pound Cake, peach cobbler and creamy hand dipped ice cream.

As usual I hit the salad bar first, Granny Paul’s Garden. Everything was so fresh and wonderful. Anything you could imagine putting on a salad was there. I got back to the table, took my first bite and the ranch dressing was difficult to swallow, I couldn’t eat the rest of it, my husband felt the same way. Macaroni salad and potato salad wasn’t bad. Wanted to go back for more, but there was still lots of stations to cover.
